History Book Update
A letter from the (Co-) Editors
Hi Everyone,
We’ve mostly worked our way through the rush of material submitted as a result of our June 30, 2009 deadline, and now we are certain we need more material for the Morris-Turnberry History Book.
The submissions we received were wonderful, but we’re scratching our heads, wondering why there weren’t more.
We think one of the reasons may be that people don’t realize how important recent stories are to a local history book. Recent stories are very important. This is actually where we can do the best job of recording what we know about our community – from memories of big gardens during the Depression and saving tinfoil to help the war effort in the 1940s, to buying a bread maker and getting the Internet – this book is to be a legacy of your community to future generations. It won’t be long before people will want to know what it was like at the turn of this century.
We really do want your stories for the book.
Of course we want stories about the turn of the last century as well. We’re just speculating about why we aren’t getting more submissions.
We’re also wondering if perhaps the problem is that people don’t know what we want. So we made up a sample story to help prime the creative juices. It’s available to download by clicking here, sample story. You’ll find a few other helpful hints for stories there as well.
Maybe the problem is fear of writing. My daughter recently pointed out that my Algebra skills have waned considerably over the last 40 years due to lack of use. Maybe people are likewise concerned with their writing skills. Not an issue. Just call us – we can talk over the phone and write the story for you.
But we think we know what the problem really is: Procrastination!
The only cure we know for procrastination is another deadline. So, we decided to set October 30, 2009 as the new deadline. Let’s hope it works.***
We really would appreciate getting your stories and photos in as soon as possible. We know you will have questions – so please contact us. Since you’re reading this on the Web, you can just click and email us. It is simple, and that way we’ll know if the website is a good way of communicating with you.
*** Editor’s note: We’ve passed the deadline, and still need stories. Please see the next article for what is happening.
